Along the river there are 10 locks and 11 dams according to the State of Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Lock #1 was damaged during a flood and removed, it was at Marrietta. These locks were built between the years 1831 and 1841. The remainder of these locks still exist and operate. They are all maintained by the state and are used for recreational boating. In 2005 many of them were repaired so the remaining 10 locks are operational during daylight hours by the State of Ohio.muskingum-riverYou can get information about boating on the river at the ODNR website.

The Muskingum is a fairly wide river and is navigable with small boats from Roscoe down to Marietta on the Ohio river. Larger boats can travel the river from Dresden down to Marietta. When the Ohio and Erie Canal was planned so was a series of improvements along the Muskingum. Now the entire river is a state park with camping areas and is designated a Waterway Trail or a Marine Parkway. You can canoe all 112 miles of it and stop along the way to camp or stay in one of the small towns along the river. The river is a great spot for fishing or water skiing.
